ERSUC has just launched the project “Glass to Glass: We Make the Impossible Happen” (“Vidro a Vidro Fazemos o Impossível”), an initiative aimed at increasing the selective collection of glass packaging within the hospitality, restaurant, retail, and service sectors.

The project will run until December 15, 2026, and will be implemented across 17 municipalities within ERSUC’s service area that currently utilize door-to-door selective collection systems: Águeda, Albergaria-a-Velha, Anadia, Aveiro, Cantanhede, Coimbra, Condeixa-a-Nova, Estarreja, Figueira da Foz, Ílhavo, Mealhada, Mira, Miranda do Corvo, Montemor-o-Velho, Ovar, Penacova, and Vagos. In total, the project will directly involve 2,923 clients.

Through this initiative, ERSUC seeks to improve both the quantity and quality of glass sent for recycling, targeting a sector that still holds significant potential for resource recovery. Over the course of nearly two months, teams of clearly identified staff members will visit participating establishments to provide information, assess current waste-sorting practices, and support the adoption of more sustainable habits.

Raising awareness through a strong local presence
The “Glass to Glass: We Make the Impossible Happen” initiative—developed with the support of Sociedade Ponto Verde under the “Rede Recicla +” (Recycle+ Network) program—is built on a community-focused approach. It promotes awareness-raising, training, and the recognition of establishments that implement sound waste-sorting practices.

A key feature of this project is the awarding of the “Glass to Glass: We Make the Impossible Happen” label, which will distinguish establishments that demonstrate excellence in the sorting of glass packaging. The seal may be displayed at the entrance to these spaces, demonstrating to customers and visitors the commitment of these economic operators to sustainability and the circular economy.

Furthermore, informational materials—such as magnets detailing waste-sorting guidelines—will be distributed to support the proper management of recyclable materials in the daily operations of these establishments.
“Food service, beverage, and other service establishments play a crucial role in waste management, given the volume of waste—particularly glass—generated in such settings. Our focus is on providing close, personalized, and ongoing support to address the actual needs of these businesses’ day-to-day operations,” emphasizes José Coelho, an administrator at ERSUC. He adds: “The strategy is built on a foundation of proximity and partnership. We want to work alongside business owners to clarify questions, raise awareness among staff, and provide active support for proper waste sorting, ensuring that the commercial sector has the necessary resources to fully integrate into the circular economy.

For ERSUC, the success of this initiative also relies on close collaboration with municipalities—key partners in promoting environmentally responsible behavior and achieving national recycling targets. At the same time, there is a call for everyone to take part in this initiative: by correctly sorting waste and using the appropriate facilities, we all contribute to a cleaner, better-cared-for region.
